They have good quality parts, but the kit needs work, and you must have tools. Mine is iron mounted, single trigger, straight barrel, and I browned everything. However, Mr. Woodfill wrote an article in Muzzle Blasts (and a chapter in his book) on shorter-than-average Hawkens, so he did acknowledge their existence. If you don't already have one, get one with the brass ring that keeps the screw centered in the barrel. Screw it in and pull it. Add some soap to aid cleaning especially if you use an oil or greasy patch lubricant. All of them are from the late 70's to the mid 80's. The 10 gauge has very good triggers so does the Navy Arms Pietta. The Pedersoli 12 gauge not so good.Powder charge. Nitro (hard) card. Shotload. Thin overshot card. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. The best range rod I have ever owned is the 44" stainless steel Creedmoor rod threaded 8/32 with a brass muzzle protector. I have broken and lost many range rods over the years and the Creedmoor steel rod from Track of the Wolf is the best I have ever used.The special tap would probably cost less than $10 so, for about $11 + postage you could have the repair in your hand. One he did he was going to freshen, but the rifling was a left hand twist and he couldn't do that so bored it out from .50 to .54.
